Plot Outline

In the autumn of 1979, Áron, a young university student from Budapest, returns to his birthplace after ten years away. His father is dying, and the village he remembers from his childhood seems to be dying with him. Crops are rotting in the fields, livestock are perishing, and the locals are falling mysteriously ill. The Communist Party offers no official explanation, while the village priest attributes the blight to divine punishment. Both the State and the Church want the questions to stop.

But Áron keeps asking.

As he struggles to understand what is destroying the village, he begins to unearth the buried layers of his own past. His mother vanished without a trace when he was only four years old—a subject his family locked away in absolute silence. Yet, in old photographs, an unknown man repeatedly appears alongside her, standing in unsettling closeness. Who was he? And why did everyone stay silent?

The deeper Áron digs, the less this looks like a simple environmental disaster. Beneath the soil, he discovers traces of something that defies the scientific knowledge of his era. While the totalitarian state apparatus moves to silence him, and the local priest twists the events to serve his own religious and financial interests, Áron edges closer to a truth where past, present, and future are no longer separate timelines.

Ultimately, the truth reveals not only the cause of the village's decay but the reality of Áron’s own lineage. A connection spanning across time and history unfolds before him, casting his mother and the enigmatic stranger in an entirely new light.

Anamnesis is a sci-fi thriller about a boy’s homecoming, the excavation of a buried past, and the salvation of a dying village. Above all, it questions whether we can ever truly own our own history. What happens when we realize that everything we know about our past was written for us by someone else?

By the end of the story, the present is already history. In a museum set in the 2100s, the reconstructed house of a long-vanished Hungarian village stands enclosed in a glass cube. Visitors pass it by. No one remembers the lives, the losses, or the secrets hidden behind the exhibit. No one, except Áron.
